“The most common ego identifications have to do with possessions, the work you do, social status and recognition, knowledge and education, physical appearance, special abilities, relationships, person and family history, belief systems, and often also political, nationalistic, racial, religious, and other collective identifications.
None of these is you.”—Eckhart Tolle
There is a point in your evolution as a human being that you begin to live more from the Heart and less from the Ego. This is life offering you the freedom and understanding you need in order to move beyond the Ego towards the happiness, peace and fulfillment that only tuning into the Heart can provide. When you follow your Heart, the results pale in comparison to the experiences you have along the way to reaching your goals. You are rewarded by the feelings of contentment, excitement and finding joy in what you are doing. And it turns out these feelings are satisfying enough on their own. If you are fulfilling your purpose in life, and you get to achieve some of the results the Ego wants too, well consider that an extra perk.
Ego encourages you to begin a relationship with someone to avoid loneliness or pursue an activity only for the sake of it. Your Heart guides you to be with someone so that you can share your happiness or try new things that make you a better person inside and out.
The voice of the Ego will always have to justify itself with logical arguments, eagerly engaging you in mind boggling or nonsensical mental debate. The Heart’s guidance keeps things unpretentious and will leave you feeling uplifted. It will never debate, only repeat the same answer over and over again.
The Heart keeps you connected with the universe and allows you to be of service to the world with your unique talents. It makes you understand that you are not complete, but always a work of art in progress. This will give you the latitude to develop your full potential so that you can share it.
When you diminish the Ego and move towards the Heart, you invite the flow of love, inner peace and abundance into your life. When you heed the voice of the Ego, you invite only shallow, disjointed decisions, which drive you to seek even greater control over your life and others, involving even more Ego. Both the cycle of the Heart and Ego are never ending. Which one do you choose to permeate and direct your reality?
