“Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.”—Wayne Dyer
Left free to wander, the good thoughts and bad thoughts will fight for position in your head. You have to learn how to take your thoughts captive—to harness those negative notions and replace them with thoughts that inspire, encourage and empower. This is not easy, but it can be done. Just as a runner prepares for a long distance race through daily discipline, you have to regulate your thoughts.
Support and motivation from others is always good. But in the end you have to be able to rely on yourself. And there is really no escaping it, because just as Dyer says, you always have a choice about what you do. So, focus on you: on your results. Review your progress so you can see how you’ve improved and what you need to change. This self-assessment can be a great motivator, as it can encourage you by showing you just how far you’ve come.
The key is to take responsibility for your own motivation and feelings and not wait around for someone else to do it for you. It is then that you will most often find a way to get yourself started towards what you want…and that momentum will carry you forward into life.
