Happiness Not Just a Chance, But a Choice — Kaylaa T. Blackwell
Happiness Not Just a Chance, But a Choice — Kaylaa T. Blackwell

Happiness is not just a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. You can be as happy as you make up your mind to be. Once you realize that happiness is not controlled by outside forces but instead by what goes on inside your mind, you can make happiness a choice, day by day.

Make it a habit to enjoy the moment. As strange as it may sound, the ability to appreciate what’s right in front of you has very little to do with what you actually have. It has more to do with how you see the good things in your life at any given time. Simply practice wanting what you already have and you’ll find that you have what you want. Take a look around—what is in front of you that you can enjoy, right now?

Decide to smile more often. A smile not only suggests a sense of happiness, a smile is often contagious. Make a conscious effort to share a smile with the next person you see. You may find that brightening someone else’s day will also brighten your own.

Take time to notice and appreciate the details. Even if you get everything you ever wanted, you are still subject to the daily highs and lows that life has to offer. When you focus on life’s small pleasures, you’ll find you have a variety of things to appreciate, no matter the changes in your life.

Happiness grows in connection with others. The Dalai Lama wrote, “ We survive here in dependence on others. Whether we like it or not, there is hardly a moment of our lives when we do no benefit from others’ activities. For this reason, it is hardly surprising that most of our happiness arises in the context of our relationships with others.” Be generous with your compassion, your time and listen when your friends have problems. Other people will notice and you will motivate them to do the same.

“To get up each morning with the resolve to be happy . . . is to set our own conditions to the events of each day. To do this is to condition circumstances instead of being conditioned by them.” –Ralph Waldo Trine

        1. Thanks so much :). I have something I want to discuss with you further to see if you are interested. Let me know the best email address to reach you, by submitting it on the contact me page. Since spambots harvest email addresses on websites, I don’t want you to leave it here. Looking forward to speaking with you more 🙂

  1. Life is mixed. We all have reasons to be either happy or unhappy. Might as well choose happiness! I’ve also noted that people who are perpetually unhappy tend to be people who are very self-centered.

    1. I couldn’t agree more with you Richard…you are so right :)…if we have a mixed bag why not choose to be happy? I also agree, we have a lot of self-centered people that are the ultimate narcissist. However, they find out sooner than later not everyone will put up with their continuous negativity/unhappiness when things don’t always go their way.

****Hope you are having a fantastic week and getting a kick out of your beautiful walks through San Diego :).

        1. Yes, I have been doing well…thank you :). Just been crazy busy working on a few things in the background that is why I have been more quiet lately.
Will be sending out a new post later today, to give a little details of what I have been up to…so stay tuned :).

  2. I like this post and can relate to it in terms of everyday life.
However, I’m not so sure that we can brush away major blows like the sudden death of one’s child or having one’s leg amputated at age 80, being made homeless due to dire financial circs, with a smile or some sort of ‘living in the moment.’
These horrors have to be dealt with and sleeping rough, for example, is certainly not an easy thing for someone to have to do with small children.
Mind over matter on it’s own won’t sort big issues, though it could help. Everyone needs to know that they are vulnerable and that they need to look out for others as well as themselves.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and its really nice to meet you :).
You have also made some interesting and worthwhile points. We certainly can’t control tragedy but we can always control our perspective and how we choose to apply the hard lessons. I am also speaking from experience for someone that has had to deal with a lot of tragedy and I still have chosen to be happy the harder they come and find a way out. So though I am very much a realist, I also understand fully well the power of positive thinking, followed up by action, as I know what is involved in taking control of your life, even when it seems you are down to nothing.
So yes…It can be truly difficult and heart rendering and some wounds will never heal, but I have found…it is not impossible to find peace or define your own happiness, when you change how you think or perceive things.

If interested, you can check out a few of my poems here that you may enjoy, as well as, get more insights on different aspects of my writing and thoughts/ideas I share. For though life is not all sunshine and roses, you can certainly take your little bit of sunshine that you create…with you and create a spark in the darkness:
